From Thread to Art: Meet the Turkish Embroidery Group at MoMu

Since October 2024, a group of Turkish women has been meeting weekly at the MoMu Café to share their passion for knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and other traditional sewing techniques. Under the expert guidance of Nerkiz Sahin and Zulbiye Ayaz, they delve into time-honoured crafts and combine them with contemporary styles and materials. What started as a small initiative has now grown into a close-knit embroidery group where meeting, collaboration, and creativity are central.

Using recycled fabrics and materials, they experiment with various techniques and create unique textile pieces where tradition and modernity come together. The cultural background of the group is reflected not only in their craftsmanship, such as fine embroidery, but also in symbolic decorations like the characteristic blue eye.

A cherished tradition at the meetings is the shared coffee break, where each week someone brings a treat. This ritual fosters camaraderie among the members and adds extra value to the gatherings.
With their collective craftsmanship, the participants created four unique silhouettes inspired by The Four Seasons, in which craft and tradition are intertwined. On Saturday, 17 May, these works will be presented in the MoMu Atrium during a special, one-time exhibition. In addition to the textile pieces, a video project will be shown that highlights the personal stories and significance of handicrafts within the group. The evening concludes with live music and a fashion show featuring the created garments, providing a meaningful end to this project. More info
