Geometry

The relationship between geometry and fashion is by no means obvious. A formal analysis of clothing brings out its relationship with geometry. Each piece of clothing, regardless of its origin or material, can in fact be reduced to a geometrical surface or to a 2-D pattern of flat surfaces. The exhibition seeked to apply such a formal analysis to contemporary fashion and historical clothing.

Description of the exhibition

Geometry is the first event of MoMu prior to its official opening in 2002. It marked a first step in the transformation of the Provincial Textile and Costume Museum Vrieselhof to ModeMuseum - Province Antwerp (MoMu). MoMu director Linda Loppa, in collaboration with guest curator Bob Verhelst, anticipated the future vision and dynamics of the museum with this exhibition. It was held at various locations in the centre of Antwerp, all of which were chosen for their stong historical and cultural connotations, each of them highlighting a different aspect of the central theme. The selection of garments was inspired by these surroundings. They allow them to gain in expressiveness and suggestiveness.
